Tasting - Fincastle Cabernet Franc

Name: Fincastle Cabernet Franc
Variety: Cabernet Franc
Region: Virginia
Country: USA
Year: 2011
Price: $15

Winery Review: Dry red aged 24 months in oak. Less tannic than Sauvignon with hints of anise, blackberry and black cherry. Cabernet Franc is lighter than Cabernet Sauvignon, making a bright pale red wine and contributing finesse and a peppery perfume to blends with more robust grapes. Depending on growing region and style of wine, additional aromas can include tobacco, raspberry, bell pepper, and cassis, sometimes even violets.

My Review: Big aromas hit the nose right away. First is earthy. Then I get oaky, tobacco, raspberries, blackberries, cherries, and pepper. The taste is a bit tannic but not too much. I taste some spice and berries. It has a long dry finish. This is a very good wine and has become one of my favorites so far.

I have tasted this on its own and with Chevre goat cheese and aged Gouda. But cheeses significantly enhanced the quality of the wine and made the finish even better.
