Tasting - Resonata Nero d'Avola

Name: Resonata Nero d'Avola
Variety: Nero d'Avola
Region: Sicily
Country: Italy
Year: 2013
Price: $6

Winery Review: This smooth, young red wine from Sicily is a fantastic value, and a case purchase would be a wise move. It has a body comparable to a fine Beaujolais, but a spicy, more earthy Italian character to it. There's plenty of black cherry fruit and enough backbone to keep it drinking well into next year. (I wouldn't cellar it for an extended period.) This is a classy wine that would be great to sip outdoors while grilling.

My Review: It has big, big aromas. Very earthy. Smells of black fruit and raspberries with some spice. The taste is similar with a lot of black fruit and with cherries. It is very tannic and dry. The flavor is muted after a bit of time. It has a short finish. It is a good little drinking wine especially for the value but it's nothing that gets me excited.

Tasting - Cono Sur Bicicleta Viognier

Name: Cono Sur Bicicleta Viognier
Variety: Viognier
Region: Colchagua Valley
Country: Chile
Year: 2014
Price: $9

Winery Review: Dressed in a beautiful medium golden color, characteristic of this variety, this Viognier exhibits sweet fruity aromas of apricots, citrus and peaches, combined with pleasant oak notes. Fresh and lively in mouth, this wine, with concentrated stone fruit flavors, is fresh, tasty, full and savoury. Of great character, density and structure, with a good acidity level and great persistence.

My Review: The smell caught me off guard with how fruity it was. I got hints of pear, melon, apricot, and peach. The taste was actually a bit different. I got some melon and quite a bit citrus. Orange was actually the dominating flavor I detected here. It tasted nice on the palate with a long finish. It was a solid Viognier and definitely a great entry point into this particular varietal.

Tasting - Turning Leaf Pinot Noir

Name: Turning Leaf Pinot Noir
Variety: Pinot Noir
Region: California
Country: USA
Year: NV
Price: $6

Winery Review: Medium-bodied with aromas of cherry and sweet fruit flavors with a smooth and light finish. Rotisserie chicken salad, roasted portabella mushrooms, cheese pizza, spicy tuna roll

My Review: It had an earthy smell with the typical black fruit smell especially blackberries and currants with raspberries. The taste was slightly tannic which added a nice quality to the wine. The fruits I tasted were black fruits and cherries. It is nice on the palate and it has a short finish. Pretty good wine especially for the value. If I am looking for a cheap Pinot that won't break the bank then this is it.

Tasting - Chateau Ste. Michelle Riesling

Name: Chateau Ste. Michelle Riesling
Variety: Riesling
Region: Columbia Valley
Country: USA
Year: 2013
Price: $10

Winery Review: Our Columbia Valley Riesling is a blend of Riesling from throughout Washington’s Columbia Valley. The wine offers crisp apple aromas and flavors with subtle mineral notes. This is our “everyday Riesling” that is a pleasure to drink and easy to match with a variety of foods.
-90 Points - Wine Enthusiast

My Review: The smell was fruity but not too much. It had hints of white fruit like pear, apricot, melon, and a little citrusy. Some green grape smell too. The taste was off-dry. Not too sweet, it was delightful. I tasted melon, peach, and citrusy notes with lime being the dominate quality. It had a short finish. It was a good drinking wine. Not overpowering or offending.

Wine and Cheese Pairing 1

Me with my precious wine
Thursday night I decided to have a wine and cheese pairing with some friends! I wanted to share my new found knowledge from class and enlighten them. The best part is we get to act classy as hell! Okay I'm just kidding. We don't have to act. Anyway, the planning was all on my shoulders and everyone was along for the ride. It gave me freedom in being able to pick the wines and the cheeses without having to really accommodate anyone. Since it was up to me I decided to pick wines that hadn't had previously. I settled on trying a Riesling and a Viognier and having a red wine that wouldn't offend so I went with a Pinot Noir.

The wonderful spread of wine and cheese

As for the cheeses, I did some research into what paired best with which wine. I came across a lot of options but ultimately went with cheeses that were generally known and liked. I picked Brie, Asiago, and Gouda. I originally picked Gruyere but the price point was more expensive than any of the wines I selected so Asiago was the alternative. So now with the wine and the cheese picked out it was time to leave Kroger and go to the house.

The first wine pairing was a 2013 Chateau Ste. Michelle from Columbia Valley, Washington with Brie. The Riesling smelled fruity with pear, melon, apricot, citrusy notes. The Brie didn't really have a smell to it at all. I tasted the wine on its own at first. It had a melon, peach, citrusy taste but lime was dominate. It was off dry so not too sweet. The Brie itself had a weird taste that was distinctly Brie. But after tasting the wine again after the cheese I did notice a difference. The Riesling tasted sweeter. I thought it paired well. Neither overpowered the other. It was mild on the palate. I liked this pairing.

The next wine pairing was Turning Leaf Pinot Noir from California and Aged Asiago. The Pinot smelled earthy with blackberries, raspberries, just black fruit smells. The Asiago was a bit smelly. It had roasted, nutty quality to the smell. It was actually quite nice. The wine had a slight tannic quality. Not too much just enough to give that red wine feel. I tasted black fruit and cherries. It was a good value wine. The Asiago was very mild tasting not overpowering in any way just a taste modifier really. After tasting the wine again I noticed a difference. The cheese cut through what little acidity the Pinot had and made it a smoother drink. It really helped the wine. This was actually my favorite pairing of the night. It just worked really well.

The final pairing of the night was a 2014 Como Sur Bicicleta Viognier from Chile with Smoked Gouda. The Viognier smelled very fruity with pear, melon, apricot, peach notes. A delightful smell to be had. The Gouda smelled straight smokey and like deli meat. It smelled as if someone dumped a bottle of Liquid Smoke over the cheese and served it to me. I liked the smell in small amounts. The wine tasted citrusy with some melon but the dominating fruit was surprisingly orange which I hadn't tasted in a wine before so that was interesting. Now tasting the Gouda was a lot like the smell. All I tasted was that smokiness. It was just overpowering how much smoke was packed into that block of cheese. Now tasting the wine again I only noticed a slight difference. The cheese actually shortened the finish of the wine. But that was the only quality I noticed. Despite the overpowering smokiness of the cheese the Viognier actually overpowered the cheese. This wasn't a great pairing but it wasn't bad either.

How long were we drinking?
Three empty bottles of wine and a seemingly neverending supply of stories later it was finally time to call it a night. The wine and cheese pairing was a complete success! Thanks are in order for our host and our designated driver. It was a fun night and the wines and cheeses were exceptional especially for their value. It was nice to try new wines and get the most out of them. Until the next one!

Tasting - Opera Prima Pink Moscato

Name: Opera Prima Pink Moscato
Variety: 97% Muscat, 3% Tempranillo
Region: La Mancha
Country: Spain
Year: 2012
Price: $7

Winery Review: A blend of Muscat 97% and Tempranillo 3%. This fine sparkling presents an intense aroma of fresh berries and tropical fruits with hints of white flower petals. Delicate bubbles caress the palate offering a silky and pleasant sweetness well balanced by a crisp, refreshing finish. Ideal on its own, as an aperitif or with all types of sweets and desserts. Serve it very cold, between 7 and 9°.

My Review: The first smell was overwhelmingly fruity. It was of pineapple, fruit rinds, a bit citrusy, and sugar candy. The taste was quite delightful. I got hints of red delicious apple, grapefruit, candy, and cotton candy. All around sweet. It was pleasant to drink and could be a dessert all on its own.

Tasting - Cortenova Primativo

Winery Review: Dark, ruby-red color with violet highlights. Intense and fragrant bouquet with a rich array of red and black fruit aromas and flavors. Harmonious and velvety on the palate. Great balance and structure. 100% Zinfandel

My Review: It had a very aromatic smell. Big smell. Hints of cherries, black cherries, and jammy. The taste was much the same with more cherries but with unripe fruit. Slight tannic quality. It had a big flavor but I couldn't pinpoint what it was. It had a long finish. It was a good wine and would probably drink again.

Tasting - Riebeek Cellars Shiraz

Name: Riebeek Cellars Shiraz
Variety: Shiraz

Winery Review: Often referred to as Shiraz Country, the Riebeek Valley is renowned for exceptional Shiraz wines. The Riebeek Shiraz is a lively rich wine, full bodied with a subdued smokiness on the nose and a pallet of ripe fruit and interesting spice.

My Review: Right off the bat I smell buttered toast which is very pleasant. Then I detect some cherries working around in there. The taste was of raspberries, blackberries, currants, and unripe fruit. The alcohol content was bit much, almost overpowering. And it had a short finish. It was an enjoyable wine and I would drink again.

Winery Review: This well-priced Friulano would pair nicely with spicy Indian or Thai food thanks to the creaminess and richness of its mouthfeel. In addition, the wine offers a solid bouquet of peach and melon that would not compete with fragrant ingredients 100% Ribolla Gialla.
-87 Points - Wine Enthusiast

My Review: The smell is very fruity and I detect hints of apple. The taste has notes of pear and green grapes. It seemed to have a medium body and felt syrupy. It was slightly acidic. It had a short finish. It was a pleasant wine but didn't stand out.

Tasting - Le Jade Sauvignon Blanc

Lively aromas and flavors of pineapple, yellow apple, melon, and Meyer lemon with a silky, bright, dry-yet-fruity medium body and a tingling, complex, medium-long finish with notes of lemongrass, pear, and lemon with no tannins and no oak. Bright and crisp with layers of juicy pineapple, pear, lemongrass and ripe melon make this perfect for repeated sipping or enhancing fresh farm to table cookery.
-89 Points - Beverage Testing Institute
My Review: Very fruity smell. It smelled of melon and green grapes. I tasted notes of green granny-smith apples, apricots, and pears. It was a bit tart and acidic. It had a long finish. Not a bad wine but wasn't exciting.

Tasting - Flying Dog Gonzo

Name: Flying Dog Gonzo Imperial Porter
Variety: Imperial Porter
Region: Maryland
Country: USA
Year: 2015
Price: $11 / 6 pack

Brewery Review: Gonzo is big, bold, and beautiful like the man it was brewed in honor of – Dr. Hunter S. Thompson. Flavor notes: Roasted chocolate, coffee, and vanilla malt flavors balanced with a unique hop bite Pairs with: Mushrooms; smoked meats, BBQ, and chili; hard cheese; chocolate and coffee desserts.

My Review: Very strong smelling beer. Hoppy and coffee smells. The taste was strong especially at 9.2% alcohol. I got tastes of chocolate, coffee, and malt. Not one single flavor was overpowering as they were all well balanced. It is a bit heavy and feels like it can be drank as a meal. Very good beer though.

-80 points

My Review: First big whiff is minerally. There is a hint of butter. An all around acidic smell. The taste is decidedly melon. On the drier side. Very light butter taste. Not too heavy. Not bold at all. Blah finish with no lingering taste. Nothing special at all. A bit disappointing actually.

Tasting - Fincastle Cabernet Franc

Name: Fincastle Cabernet Franc
Variety: Cabernet Franc
Region: Virginia
Country: USA
Year: 2011
Price: $15

Winery Review: Dry red aged 24 months in oak. Less tannic than Sauvignon with hints of anise, blackberry and black cherry. Cabernet Franc is lighter than Cabernet Sauvignon, making a bright pale red wine and contributing finesse and a peppery perfume to blends with more robust grapes. Depending on growing region and style of wine, additional aromas can include tobacco, raspberry, bell pepper, and cassis, sometimes even violets.

My Review: Big aromas hit the nose right away. First is earthy. Then I get oaky, tobacco, raspberries, blackberries, cherries, and pepper. The taste is a bit tannic but not too much. I taste some spice and berries. It has a long dry finish. This is a very good wine and has become one of my favorites so far.

I have tasted this on its own and with Chevre goat cheese and aged Gouda. But cheeses significantly enhanced the quality of the wine and made the finish even better.

Tasting - Sheffield Cellars Tawny Port

Name: Sheffield Cellars Tawny Port
Variety: Tawny Port
Region: California
Country: USA
Year: NV
Price: $5.60

Winery Review: Deep garnet color. Spicy boysenberry, buttery caramel, straw, and nut aromas. A soft, silky entry leads to a sweet and somewhat limp medium-to-full bodied palate of boysenberry tart, spice, and white pepper flavors. Finishes with a chalky fruit, spiky alcohol, and toasted nut fade. Strictly commercial.

My Review: Big aromas. Fruity but with an overwhelming alcohol smell. Nutty, caramel, oaky smells follow. It tastes fruity specifically cherries and berries. There's a taste of oak and caramel and nuts. The finish is sort of acidic and spicy.

My Review: Has a fruity aroma. Pick up hints of berries specifically strawberries. The overwhelming taste of this wine is of berries. It is sweet with the bubbles adding to body. I tasted this cold. It has a smooth finish with no awkward lingering taste but the bubbles sort of turned me off of this wine.

Tasting - Left Hand Brewing Company Milk Stout Nitro

Name: Left Hand Brewing Company Milk Stout Nitro
Variety: Milk Stout
Region: Colorado
Country: USA
Year: 2015
Price: $12.50 / 6 pack

Brewery Review: Dark & delicious, America’s great milk stout will change your perception about what a stout can be. Pouring hard out of the bottle, Milk Stout Nitro cascades beautifully, building a tight, thick head like hard whipped cream. The aroma is of brown sugar and vanilla cream, with hints of roasted coffee. The pillowy head coats your upper lip and its creaminess entices your palate. Initial roasty, mocha flavors rise up, with slight hop & roast bitterness in the finish. The rest is pure bliss of milk chocolate fullness.

My Review: Forms a nice brownish head when poured hard. The smell is bitter like coffee and chocolate and kind of nutty. Very nice aroma. The taste is like roasted nuts and is bitter in a good way. The foam provides another taste giving it a steamed milk quality, creamy. It finishes nicely like coffee. It drinks like a meal. Definitely one of the best beers I've had.
